OPEN CINEMA is an outstanding film festival for Saint-Petersburg and Russia as a whole. It is the largest international forum of short films in Russia and a sole open-air film festival in Saint-Petersburg, arranged on the beach of the Peter and Paul Fortress. The festival presents short authored films showcased on a large screen in the very centre of the city. The festival program includes films from around the world thanks to its partnership with a number of leading film festivals and studios from Russia and abroad. Its mission is to maintain and develop an individual approach to cinematograph. OPEN CINEMA aims to attract as many as possible spectators to the authored film, and that becomes the reason of the festival preference to the relevant and popular forms of presenting its intellectual product. Among them there are open-air format and a number of extra elements to create the right atmosphere at the event such as contemporary theatre and music performances, video-installations, exhibitions, etc. This is the synthesis through which film-makers get new ideas for the creating and spectators get new angles for the perceiving.

«Cinema is an art of flashes» is the very precise Paradjanov’s definition, that has become an epigraph of anniversary fifth edition of OPEN CINEMA festival in Saint-Petersburg. Flashes of lives are the cardiogram of Way. Flashes of spirit are the rupture human existence’s turbidity. Flashes of light are the pulse of soul. Flashes of revelations are the dialogue with heaven. Paradjanov’s life and works are the firework of piercing flashes.
The anniversary fifth edition of OPEN CINEMA festival will pass under the badge of Sergey Paradjanov’s works, whose 85th anniversary of the birth is celebrated this year. Nine days in August (after nine films, created by the director) are filling with Paradjanov’s Red. COLOR OF POMEGRANATES is a symbol and a concept of OPEN CINEMA 2009.
